After some back and forth with couple of people from the fitness industry, we decided to approach Sandra, a close friend of ours who we know was going to be up to the task. She completed the 2. Sandra, the rest is yours. The passion for competing has returned, but this time it was nearly impossible to restart the same fitness routine I previously subscribed to. Slightly overweight and lacking the physical preparedness, I needed something else. I. When the guys from Lifestyle Updated approached me, I figured why not go with it and see how things are going to work out. What is interesting about 2. Day Fix, is the fact that it contains a nutrition program in the package as well. In addition, 2. 1 Day Fix is by far the shortest program out there (as opposed to workout programs like the Cize Workout or Insanity Max 3. Autumn Calabrese made it simple enough so you will enjoy every step of the way. Simple exercise, revolutionary simple portion control, and just 3. Why the 2. 1 Day Fix? Coming from a fitness background I can go ahead and analyze many details in this 2. Day Fix review as for why this program makes sense. Trying to stick close to layman terms, here are just few in order to put things into perspective. It combines many methods of training including cardio, resistance training, Pilates, Yoga, compound exercises. Not going to cite sources on why this is so important, let us just say that it is quite convenient. You are doing everything from the comfort of your own home. Not a real game changer for me, but I know people who are very hard to persuade when it comes to going to the gym. If you are one of those, this is as much convenience as money can buy. The whole length of the program is 2. Nothing can beat this so far. It includes a very detailed yet practical nutrition guide, as well as a very revolutionary approach to portion control as well. There is a modifier to every move, so everyone can do it. Another 3 day fix nutrition plan that is going to make you Bikini ready in 7. For this I say thanks. Why not 2. 1 Day Fix? Probably a more useful chapter than the one above, this is where I find 2. Day Fix failing to deliver: You cannot bulk up a lot. Having trained to compete back in the day this is sad news for me. You can really lose up to 1. Gotta have to do it twice if you would like to shred over 2. There is not a single day of rest. Sundays are booked for the Yoga fix routine of the program, but despite being relaxing and easy it is still not a complete rest. Thursdays are for the Pilates routine though, and this is yet another form of mini rest. If you’re looking for something more customizable and affordable, we’ve launched our own fitness workout platform. What should you expect from 2. Day fix? Depending on your expectations, 2. Day Fix either fails miserably or works wonders, so let me explain. You will figure it out within minutes though. Expect to lose up to 1. Expect a lot of improvement in your physical preparedness. Expect to have solid muscle definition and even a six- pack showing. Expect a lot of fun during the period of 2. Day fix – reviews of the workouts. A nicely paced routine that will make you sweat a lot and definitely leave you without breath if you dig deep enough. A lot of innovative and engaging moves, you will never notice it lasting for over 3. Yoga Fix. Done on Sunday, this workout routine will allow you to relax and stretch every muscle in your body. It is responsible for improving your flexibility and balance, as well as allowing you to improve in other fitness verticals during the upcoming week. Pilates Fix. You are doing this one each Thursday, and it will give you a mini rest that you are about to appreciate rather much. However, though resting your body from cardio- vascular activity, it will tone your muscles and especially your core- for nearly all exercises target the core in one way or the other. Upper body Fix. A lot of movements targeting the abdomen and back, as well as chest and shoulders as well; this one is packed with resistance moves, and has circuit training integrated. You can use either dumbbells or a resistance band. The 2. 1 Day Fix eating plan. Here you have the practical yet very detailed nutrition plan that takes you step by step, and you get the colored containers in the package as well. The eating program uses a color coded system of containers to give you perfect portion control every time with almost zero mistakes. Just choose the foods from the list that comes with the program. Day Fix workout and getting the most out of it. Anything else, let me know in the comments. Beginners Running Program . The running program below, adapted from the New York Road Runners Club, does exactly that and is an example of an ten- week run/walk strategy, aimed at beginners in good health. All it requires on your part is the commitment to go out and run 3, preferably 5 times, a week. You’ll know how often to run, by listening to your body. Some people take more time to recover between workouts and need to run fewer times a week, while others recover very quickly and can run more. Also, be sure to meet your body’s daily nutritional requirements, as you need these nutrients to get stronger from your running sessions. Eating right will help you recover faster from your workouts. Read more about what to eat before and after a workout. Depending on how often you are running, try to allow for a day of recovery between runs. For example, if you are running 4 times a week, avoid running 4 consecutive days. RUNNING INTENSITYWarm up before you start with a 5 – 1. Run at a moderate pace, at 6. You should be able to pass the “talk test.”If you run flat out, you will be too exhausted to repeat the intervals and will probably vow to never run again. The walking breaks are important too. Walking intervals allows you to recover and means that you can run for longer. Remember, you are running for endurance, not sprinting. It also breaks your run into manageable parts, decreases the likelihood of aches, pain and injury. You feel great afterwards, not overwhelmingly fatigued and completely exhausted. You can for long distances, which you otherwise wouldn’t be able to do. WEEKRun- Walk Plan. Total Duration. 11 min run, 2 min walk (7x)2. Run 2. 0 minutes continuously. This program should suit most non- active beginners. Therefore, if you can, follow the program exactly. However, if you are very overweight, older or have been very inactive, it will probably take longer. Do not exceed what you can do, listen to your body. Stay at the level you can handle until you feel able to move to the next stage. It doesn’t matter if it takes you twenty weeks. The goal is to get there. On the other hand, if you have been somewhat active before, you may find the program too easy and progress quickly (or try the fast- track beginners running plan). In that case, simply move forward to the next level. Once you hit 2. 0 minutes nonstop running, move on to the advanced beginners program. You may be able to complete 3. The goal of this running program is to get there uninjured and it is better to veer on the side of caution. For some tips on running form check out the running form infographic. Remember to clear any exercise program with your doctor before starting, especially if you have any medical condition. Once you have completed this program you can continue your improvements by moving on to the next. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Lap- Band Shown Effective for Long- Term Weight Loss. SOURCE: O. You should never diet again: The science and genetics of weight loss. I’ve given you the bad news: diets fail in the long run. Now, let’s try to understand why. In social psychology we often say that if you find that most people behave in the same way, then the explanation for their behavior has very little to do with the kind of people they are. It has to do with the circumstances in which they find themselves. For example, most students in class raise their hands and wait quietly to be called on before speaking. It’s not that they are all timid or overly polite types of people. ![]() How to Lose Weight in One Month- Diet Chart for Weight Loss This post is for Rati and Mrunmayee, who followed the 4 weeks diet. Does Diet Soda Make You Fat, or Does it Help Weight Loss? It’s that the classroom setting is sufficiently powerful that without really thinking about it, nearly everyone ends up following the same unwritten rules. When we think about people who regain weight after dieting, it’s a similar principle. It’s not that they have a weak will or lack discipline, or that they didn’t want it enough, or didn’t care. It’s about the circumstances in which they find themselves, and the automatic behavior that is provoked by those settings. ![]() In other words: if you have trouble keeping weight off, it is not a character flaw. When it comes to keeping weight off, a combination of circumstances conspires against you. Each one on its own makes it difficult, but put them together and you are no longer in a fair fight. One circumstance that makes things hard is our environment of near- constant temptation. ![]() Two others are biology and psychology. I realize it may seem odd to you that I am calling these things “circumstances,” but, like a classroom setting and the behavior it produces, we need to acknowledge the context in which you regain weight. To an important extent, weight regain after a diet is your body’s evolved response to starvation. When you are dieting, it may feel as though you are about to starve to death, but you know that you can open the fridge at any time and find more to eat, if you really wanted to. Your body doesn’t know this, however, and you have no way to tell it that you just want slimmer hips or a flatter stomach. All your body knows is that not enough calories are coming in, so it kicks into survival mode. From an evolutionary perspective, the bodies that were best able to survive in times of scarcity (and then pass their genes on to future generations) were those that could use energy efficiently in order to get by on tiny amounts of food. Sacred Heart Diet, including summary, recipes, ingredients & more. Detailed Sacred Heart Diet work for weight loss? Is it safe or a scam?![]() ![]() Another quality that would have helped you survive was psychological: a single- minded pursuit of more fuel—and once you located it, the overwhelming urge to eat lots of every type of food you found. Together, these biological and psychological forces make regaining lost weight all too easy. Let’s take a closer look at the biological ones first, because they set the stage for everything else. YOU CAN (PARTLY) BLAME BIOLOGYYour genes play an important role in determining how much you weigh throughout your life. In fact, your genetic code contains the blueprint for your body type and, more or less, the weight range that you can healthily maintain. Your body tends to stay in that range—which I will refer to as your set weight range—most of your adult life. If your weight strays outside it, multiple systems of your body make changes that push you back toward it. While this may seem controversial—aren’t we all in control of our own weight?—the role of your genes in regulating weight is backed up by solid evidence. ![]() And we don’t even need to rely on high- tech gene mapping to understand this; we just need to study people who share the same genetics. One classic study compared the weight of more than 5. Obviously, if genes matter more to weight than does environment, the children’s weight should be similar to the weight of their biological parents. If learned eating habits have more of an impact on weight, their weight should be more like their adoptive parents. In fact, researchers found that the children’s weight correlated strongly with the weight of their biological parents and not at all with the weight of their adoptive parents. That evidence always blows me away, but if that’s not persuasive enough for you, there’s also evidence from studies of twins. Twin studies are commonly used to see how much genes matter in all sorts of human features, from personality traits to psychological disorders to physical diseases. The problem for eating studies is, while identical twins share all of the same genes, they also typically share the same eating environment. So if features are common in both twins, it is possible that they are the result of a shared environment. To tease apart the effects of genes from the effects of the shared environment, researchers located identical twins that were raised in separate homes without knowing each other. It may seem surprising that there are enough sets of twins that meet this criteria, but there are. This type of twin research was partly pioneered in the very psychology department in which I work, at the University of Minnesota (coincidentally located in the twin cities of Minneapolis and St. If you go up to the fifth floor, the walls are covered with photographs of identical twins that were separated at the age of five months (on average) and had been apart for about thirty years before being reunited as adults. The visible similarities are remarkable, as are the many documented behavioral similarities. The crucial twin study of body weight (which comes from the Swedish Adoption/Twin Study of Aging) included 9. Sure enough, the weights of identical twins, whether they were raised together or apart, were highly correlated. That study, along with several others, led scientists to conclude that genes account for 7. What is truly remarkable is that this is only slightly lower than the role genes play in height (about 8. I’m not saying you can’t influence your weight at all, just that the amount of influence you have is fairly limited, and you’ll generally end up within your genetically determined set weight range. Okay, so maybe you can’t easily influence your weight to achieve long- lasting losses, you might say, but it seems all too easy to influence it in the direction of weight gain, right? Actually, it’s not as easy as you might think. Researchers have studied that side of the equation, too—instead of having people lose weight and then try to maintain the thin weight, they had people gain weight and then try to maintain the fat weight. Staying fat shouldn’t be that difficult, should it? In one set of studies, researchers tried to make people fat by overfeeding them. They didn’t want exercise to get in the way of weight gain, so they did these studies with people they could prevent from doing any exercise at all: prisoners. I’m not wild about using prisoners in research because it is often hard for them to refuse to participate, but the researchers explained their plans fully and got permission from each prisoner. Several fascinating things happened next. First of all, it was remarkably difficult to make the prisoners fat. The prisoners had to eat enormous quantities of food—some of them over 1. That’s a lot of extra calories, considering men in the United States tend to average about 2,5. Some of the prisoners could not gain that much weight, despite eating huge amounts of food, and the prisoners gained much less weight than the researchers predicted based on the amount of calories they consumed. And most surprising, once the prisoners had gained weight, it was very difficult for them to keep it on. They had to continue eating a large number of calories per day (at least 2,7. When researchers tried the same study with dedicated student volunteers who were free to walk around and exercise some, they were actually unable to turn them obese. In another study, researchers fed twins an additional 1,0. They did this for 1. Like the prisoners, these twins were unable to maintain the higher weights. In addition to showing why it is so difficult to maintain a weight higher or lower than is dictated by our genes, these kinds of studies also offer evidence that our genes control how much weight we gain. Even when study participants were fed the same amount of calories, they gained varying amounts of weight. The pairs of twins that were overfed 1,0. In other words: the same number of calories led some people to gain three times as much weight as other people. Moreover, each twin gained nearly the same amount as their own twin, even though each pair of twins gained different amounts of weight than the other pairs of twins. All of these studies are evidence that your body is trying to keep you within that genetically determined set weight range. When our weight is within this range, we don’t have to fight to maintain it. We can eat a little more or a little less, exercise a little more or a little less—and it won’t have much of a lasting impact. The hard part is trying to get out of that range, because to do so, you have to battle biology. Your body uses many biological tricks to defend your set range, particularly if you get below it, because this is when your body thinks you are starving to death. To save you, it makes you eat more food, and stores some of the energy you consume in case of emergency. When you are dieting and hungry, your brain responds differently to tasty- looking food than it does when you are not dieting. The areas of the brain that become unusually active make you more likely to notice food, prompt you to pay more attention to it when you find it, and make it look even more delicious and tempting than usual. These are potent signals to eat. At the same time, activity is reduced in the prefrontal cortex, the “executive function” part of the brain that helps you make decisions and resist impulses. Either one of those responses would make you more likely to indulge, but when you put them together, you don’t stand a chance. Your ability to resist is taking a snooze exactly when you most want its support. The Dukan diet seems to be the latest diet in Dietland. Low- carbohydrate diets or low- carb diets are dietary programs that restrict carbohydrate consumption, often for the treatment of obesity or diabetes. Foods high in easily digestible carbohydrates (e. The amount of carbohydrate allowed varies with different low- carbohydrate diets. Such diets are sometimes 'ketogenic' (i. The induction phase of the Atkins diet. According to one survey of these societies, a relatively low carbohydrate (2. A very low- carbohydrate, ketogenic diet was the standard treatment for diabetes throughout the 1. Steiner at the 1. Connecticut State Medical Society as The Starvation Treatment of Diabetes Mellitus. Then eggs and meat were added, building up to 1g of protein/kg of body weight per day, then fat was added to the point where the person stopped losing weight or a maximum of 4. The process was halted if sugar appeared in the person's urine. Mackarness also challenged the . It is regarded as one of the first low- carbohydrate diets to become popular in the United States. Atkins Diet Revolution, which advocated the low- carbohydrate diet he had successfully used in treating patients in the 1. ![]() JAMA). Later that decade, Walter Voegtlin and Herman Tarnower published books advocating the Paleolithic diet and Scarsdale diet, respectively, each meeting with moderate success. This concept classifies foods according to the rapidity of their effect on blood sugar levels . Atkins New Diet Revolution, and other doctors began to publish books based on the same principles. This has been said to be the beginning of what the mass media call the . By some accounts, up to 1. This means sharply reducing consumption of desserts, breads, pastas, potatoes, rice, and other sweet or starchy foods. ![]() Some recommend levels less than 2. Institute of Medicine recommends a minimum intake of 1. In practice, though, . Low- GI/low- GL diets are based on the measured change in blood glucose levels in various carbohydrates . The differences are due to poorly understood digestive differences between foods. However, as foods influence digestion in complex ways (e. Although such diet recommendations mostly involve lowering nutritive carbohydrates, some low- carbohydrate foods are discouraged, as well (e. Like glycemic- index diets, predicting the insulin secretion from any particular meal is difficult, due to assorted digestive interactions and so differing effects on insulin release. While mild acidosis may be a side effect when beginning a ketogenic diet. It should not be conflated with diabetic ketoacidosis, which can be life- threatening. A diet very low in starches and sugars induces several adaptive responses. Low blood glucose causes the pancreas to produce glucagon. When liver glycogen stores are exhausted, the body starts using fatty acids instead of glucose. Are you ready for the ultimate detox solution? The brain cannot use fatty acids for energy, and instead uses ketones produced from fatty acids by the liver. By using fatty acids and ketones as energy sources, supplemented by conversion of proteins to glucose (gluconeogenesis), the body can maintain normal levels of blood glucose without dietary carbohydrates. Most advocates of low- carbohydrate diets, such as the Atkins diet, argue that the human body is adapted to function primarily in ketosis. They argue that the purported dangers of ketosis are unsubstantiated (some of the arguments against ketosis result from confusion between ketosis and ketoacidosis, which is a mostly diabetic condition unrelated to dieting or low- carbohydrate intake). Most low- carb diet plans discourage consumption of trans fat. On a high- carbohydrate diet, glucose is used by cells in the body for the energy needed for their basic functions, and about two- thirds of body cells require insulin to use glucose. ![]() Excessive amounts of blood glucose are thought to be a primary cause of the complications of diabetes, when glucose reacts with body proteins (resulting in glycosolated proteins) and change their behavior. Perhaps for this reason, the amount of glucose tightly maintained in the blood is quite low. Unless a meal is very low in starches and sugars, blood glucose will rise for a period of an hour or two after a meal. When this occurs, beta cells in the pancreas release insulin to cause uptake of glucose into cells. ![]() In liver and muscle cells, more glucose is taken in than is needed and stored as glycogen (once called 'animal starch'). In diabetics, glucose levels vary in time with meals and vary a little more as a result of high- carbohydrate meals. In nondiabetics, blood- sugar levels are restored to normal levels within an hour or two, regardless of the content of a meal. However, the ability of the body to store glycogen is finite. Once liver and muscular stores are filled to the maximum, adipose tissue (subcutaneous and visceral fat stores) becomes the site of sugar storage in the form of fat. However, a very- low- carbohydrate diet (less than 2. The opposite is also true; for instance, clinical experience suggests very- low- carbohydrate diets for patients with metabolic syndrome. Researchers and other experts have published articles and studies that run the gamut from promoting the safety and efficacy of these diets. However, studies emerged which evaluate these diets over much longer periods, controlled studies as long as two years and survey studies as long as two decades. The review included both extreme low carbohydrate diets high in both protein and fat, as well as less extreme low carbohydrate diets that are high in protein but with recommended intakes of fat. The authors found that when the amount of energy (kilojoules/calories) consumed by people following the low carbohydrate and balanced diets (4. For blood pressure, cholesterol levels and diabetes markers there was also no difference detected between the low carbohydrate and the balanced diets. The follow- up of these trials was no longer than two years, which is too short to provide an adequate picture of the long term risk of following a low carbohydrate diet. However, the agency also concluded, over a longer span (1. The authors of this review also found a higher rate of attrition in groups with low- fat diets, and concluded, . Some of these organizations receive funding from the food industry. The paper expresses reservations about the Atkins plan, but acknowledges it as a legitimate weight- loss approach. Nevertheless, this is perhaps the first statement of support, albeit for the short term, by a medical organization. Excess calories from carbohydrates are not any more fattening than calories from other sources. Despite the claims of low- carb diets, a high- carbohydrate diet does not promote fat storage by enhancing insulin resistance. Robert Eckel, past president, noted that a low- carbohydrate diet could potentially meet AHA guidelines if it conformed to the AHA guidelines for low fat content. Moreover, other statements suggest their position might be re- evaluated in the event of more evidence from longer- term studies. National Health Service (UK)The consumer advice statements of the NHS regarding low- carbohydrate diets state that . Department of Health and Human Services. The HHS issues consumer guidelines for maintaining heart health which state regarding low- carbohydrate diets that . An argument for the use of the diet can potentially be supported by . What we do know from the evidence is that eating a wide variety of nutritious foods, in the right amounts, is crucial to optimal health. Low- density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL) and creatinine did not change significantly. The study found the LCD was shown to have favorable effects on body weight and major cardiovascular risk factors (but concluded the effects on long- term health are unknown). The study did not compare health benefits of LCD to low- fat diets. The researchers concluded that low- carbohydrate, Mediterranean, low- glycemic index, and high- protein diets are effective in improving markers of risk for cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Thus, in absolute terms, even sweet fruits and berries do not represent a significant source of carbohydrates in their natural form, and also typically contain a good deal of fiber which attenuates the absorption of sugar in the gut. Some vegetables, such as potatoes and carrots, have high concentrations of starch, as do corn and rice. Most low- carbohydrate diet plans accommodate vegetables such as broccoli, spinach, cauliflower, and peppers. Nevertheless, debate remains as to whether restricting even just high- carbohydrate fruits, vegetables, and grains is truly healthy. Low- carbohydrate vegetarianism is also practiced. Raw fruits and vegetables are packed with an array of other protective chemicals, such as vitamins, flavonoids, and sugar alcohols. Some of those molecules help safeguard against the over- absorption of sugars in the human digestive system. The primary reason for this recommendation is that if the switch from a high- carbohydrate to a low- carbohydrate, ketogenic diet is rapid, the body can temporarily go through a period of adjustment during which it may require extra vitamins and minerals. This is because the body releases excess fluids stored during high- carbohydrate eating. In other words, the body goes through a temporary . This does not, in and of itself, indicate that either type of diet is nutritionally deficient. While many foods rich in carbohydrates are also rich in vitamins and minerals, many low- carbohydrate foods are similarly rich in vitamins and minerals. This argument, by itself, is incomplete. Although many dietary carbohydrates do break down into glucose, most of that glucose does not remain in the bloodstream for long. Its presence stimulates the beta cells in the pancreas to release insulin, which has the effect of causing about two- thirds of body cells to take in glucose, and causing fat cells to take in fatty acids and store them. Health Benefits of Grass-Fed Products. Meat, eggs, and dairy products from pastured animals are ideal for your health. Compared with commercial products, they offer. Intensive animal farming or industrial livestock production, also known as factory farming by opponents of the practice, is a modern form of intensive farming that. Originally, the primary value in poultry was eggs, and meat was considered a byproduct of egg production. Except in hot weather, eggs can be shipped and stored without refrigeration for some time before going bad; this was important in the days before widespread refrigeration. Farm flocks tended to be small because the hens largely fed themselves through foraging, with some supplementation of grain, scraps, and waste products from other farm ventures. Such feedstuffs were in limited supply, especially in the winter, and this tended to regulate the size of the farm flocks. Soon after poultry keeping gained the attention of agricultural researchers (around 1. Prior to about 1. Sunday dinner. Poultry was shipped live or killed, plucked, and packed on ice (but not eviscerated). Before this, poultry were often cleaned by the neighborhood butcher, though cleaning poultry at home was a commonplace kitchen skill. Two kinds of poultry were generally used: broilers or . Before this, chickens did not thrive during the winter (due to lack of sunlight), and egg production, incubation, and meat production in the off- season were all very difficult, making poultry a seasonal and expensive proposition. Year- round production lowered costs, especially for broilers. At the same time, egg production was increased by scientific breeding. After a few false starts, (such as the Maine Experiment Station's failure at improving egg production) success was shown by Professor Dryden at the Oregon Experiment Station. In the 1. 93. 0s through the early 1. In the late 1. 95. Not long after this, prices fell still further and large numbers of egg farmers left the business. Robert Plamondon. But the standard laying house of the current operators is around 1. This fall in profitability was accompanied by a general fall in prices to the consumer, allowing poultry and eggs to lose their status as luxury foods. The vertical integration of the egg and poultry industries was a late development, occurring after all the major technological changes had been in place for years (including the development of modern broiler rearing techniques, the adoption of the Cornish Cross broiler, the use of laying cages, etc.). By the late 1. 95. Large farms and packing plants could grow birds by the tens of thousands. Chickens could be sent to slaughterhouses for butchering and processing into prepackaged commercial products to be frozen or shipped fresh to markets or wholesalers. Meat- type chickens currently grow to market weight in six to seven weeks, whereas only fifty years ago it took three times as long. Once a meat consumed only occasionally, the common availability and lower cost has made chicken a common meat product within developed nations. Growing concerns over the cholesterol content of red meat in the 1. Today, eggs are produced on large egg ranches on which environmental parameters are well controlled. Chickens are exposed to artificial light cycles to stimulate egg production year- round. In addition, it is a common practice to induce molting through careful manipulation of light and the amount of food they receive in order to further increase egg size and production. On average, a chicken lays one egg a day, but not on every day of the year. This varies with the breed and time of year. In 1. 90. 0, average egg production was 8. In 2. 00. 0, it was well over 3. In the United States, laying hens are butchered after their second egg laying season. In Europe, they are generally butchered after a single season. The laying period begins when the hen is about 1. Males of the egg- type breeds have little commercial value at any age, and all those not used for breeding (roughly fifty percent of all egg- type chickens) are killed soon after hatching. The old hens also have little commercial value. Thus, the main sources of poultry meat 1. Some believe that the . Webster et al.: Transmission of highly pathogenic H5. N1 from domestic poultry back to migratory waterfowl in western China has increased the geographic spread. The spread of H5. N1 and its likely reintroduction to domestic poultry increase the need for good agricultural vaccines. In fact, the root cause of the continuing H5. N1 pandemic threat may be the way the pathogenicity of H5. N1 viruses is masked by cocirculating influenza viruses or bad agricultural vaccines. But if they have been using vaccines now ? There is bad vaccine that stops the disease in the bird but the bird goes on pooping out virus and maintaining it and changing it. And I think this is what is going on in China. Either there is not enough vaccine being used or there is substandard vaccine being used. We can't blame China for substandard vaccines. I think there are substandard vaccines for influenza in poultry all over the world. There has been a lot of criticism of what they have done, because they have protected their chickens against death from this virus but the chickens still get infected; and then you get drift . Caging (no free range poultry) is one way. Providing wild birds with restored wetlands so they naturally choose nonlivestock areas is another way that helps accomplish this. Political forces are increasingly demanding the selection of one, the other, or both based on nonscientific reasons. In this system of pig production grower pigs are housed indoors in group- housing or straw- lined sheds, whilst pregnant sows are confined in sow stalls (gestation crates) and give birth in farrowing crates. The use of sow stalls (gestation crates) has resulted in lower production costs, however, this practice has led to more significant animal welfare concerns. Florida and Arizona) have banned them. Intensive piggeries are generally large warehouse- like buildings. Indoor pig systems allow the pig. Buildings are ventilated and their temperature regulated. Most domestic pig varieties are susceptible to heat stress, and all pigs lack sweat glands and cannot cool themselves. Pigs have a limited tolerance to high temperatures and heat stress can lead to death. Maintaining a more specific temperature within the pig- tolerance range also maximizes growth and growth to feed ratio. In an intensive operation pigs will lack access to a wallow (mud), which is their natural cooling mechanism. Intensive piggeries control temperature through ventilation or drip water systems (dropping water to cool the system). Pigs are naturally omnivorous and are generally fed a combination of grains and protein sources (soybeans, or meat and bone meal). Larger intensive pig farms may be surrounded by farmland where feed- grain crops are grown. Alternatively, piggeries are reliant on the grains industry. Pig feed may be bought packaged or mixed on- site. The intensive piggery system, where pigs are confined in individual stalls, allows each pig to be allotted a portion of feed. The individual feeding system also facilitates individual medication of pigs through feed. This has more significance to intensive farming methods, as the close proximity to other animals enables diseases to spread more rapidly. To prevent disease spreading and encourage growth, drug programs such as antibiotics, vitamins, hormones and other supplements are preemptively administered. Indoor systems, especially stalls and pens (i. In an indoor intensive pig farm, manure can be managed through a lagoon system or other waste- management system. However, odor remains a problem which is difficult to manage. The way animals are housed in intensive systems varies. Breeding sows will spend the bulk of their time in sow stalls (also called gestation crates) during pregnancy or farrowing crates, with litter, until market. Piglets often receive range of treatments including castration, tail docking to reduce tail biting, teeth clipped (to reduce injuring their mother's nipples and prevent later tusk growth) and their ears notched to assist identification. Treatments are usually made without pain killers. Weak runts may be slain shortly after birth. Piglets also may be weaned and removed from the sows at between two and five weeks old . Let their body get used to the new foods before you start feeding them a huge variety of foods. Some dogs might not know what to do with the bones at first, but they will get the hang of it. If you have a small dog or a dog that doesn't get the hang of it, you can try crunching the bone into smaller pieces, or holding one edge of the bone for them. For veggie meals, I would start with bland veggies with a bit of lean ground meat. I would also wait to start adding any supplements until you are settled into a routine. These are just some of the basics of the diet. This is just a guide to help you get started as each dog is different and so is their activity level. As the days go on put your hand on your dog's rib cage and see if you press lightly you should feel ribs but not see them. If you can't feel ribs, your dog is too fat and if you can see ribs, your dog is too thin. I feed 2x/day, so I split these amounts into 2 feedings but I am giving you a full day's worth for the RMB meal. Golden Retriever - 5. RMB meal - 1# chicken backs, or 1. You can feed lamb, but it is rich so I don't suggest it in the beginning. Lamb riblets (I think in Australia they are called lamb flaps) have soft very chewable bones and this is what I use if I can get it. If yours eats other fishes then serve 'em up. I split one large can or 2 small cans among my four dogs. Offal - Offal (or organ meat, e. Now and then if I have a piece of cauliflower I toss that in too. To most meals I add 1 teaspoon of oil (cold pressed flaxseed, or safflower or vegetable or olive but usually flaxseed for Omegas). Also I add Vitamin C (about 2. Halve the vitamins of yeast, kelp, alfalfa and remember Vitamin C 1. Vitamin E/day. Cocker Spaniel 2. I take a little away or add a little from his meals constantly - as I said, adjust to each dog's activity level and metabolism. Billinghurst says - this is not etched in stone. Try to keep the diet bland and simple at first. This is particularly important for older/middle aged dogs. Don't overload your dog with the 'good stuff' - he may not be able to handle it yet - particularly after a lifetime on kibble. Start with just some lean chicken or turkey necks or backs only for the first couple of days, keeping meals small to begin with and don't let your dog overdo it. Once the dog has settled into this, add some bland veggies with a bit of lean mince (ground meat). The veggies do need to be pulped up using something like a blender, juicer or food processor. You are aiming for something a bit like the vegetable matter found in the stomach of a prey animal. The reason for this is that dogs can not digest cellulose. Cell walls of plants are made of cellulose, so for our dogs to get the nutrients out of them, we need to crush the cell walls. Chopping them up only crushes the cell walls on the outside, leaving the bit in the middle pretty much unavailable to them nutritionally. Cooking them will also destroy the cell walls, but as this also destroys a lot of the nutrients and enzymes in the veggies, it kind of defeats the purpose. You can start adding richer food like eggs and liver (and maybe leaving a little bit more fat on the chicken/turkey) after a week or two once your dog is used to the simple diet. And after you have got the hang of it for a few weeks, THEN start thinking about adding supplements, if you want to. Don't try to do it all at once. It is also suggested that with dogs new to the BARF diet that you stay away from the harder or fattier bones for at least a few months (and perhaps longer, particularly for older dogs). Give them time to develop some 'strength' in their digestive system first. Billinghurt's BARF Diet. Billinghurst's BARF DIET. This means - in addition to containing those nutrients which “must be present” in processed pet foods, the Dr. Billinghurst's BARF DIET. These are the nutrients found only in whole raw foods. Furthermore, all of these nutrients are present in their biologically available form. In other words, this is a diet that goes well beyond the standards laid down for modern processed pet foods. Another alternative I'd like to recommend is Life's Abundance, 1. Harvey's, a prepared raw diet like Oma's Pride or even Verve, Force or Embark, which is a dehydrated holistic dog food line. So, if you want to feed half & half, feed kibble one meal, raw the next. Jane Bicks, nationally recognized holistic veterinarian. That is chicken necks, wings, backs etc. Go back to the 2% of his body weight again and multiply that number by . For example: One of my Boxers weighs 7. Lbs. Patty mix.- -- -- 4. Veg. Patty mix. Remember this is only a place to start - adjust everything up or down, depending on your dogs condition. I would suggest adding some probiotics to the diet to help restore good bacteria into the system to fight the bad bacteria and help increase immunity. You can do this by adding yogurt with live cultures in it to the diet or by getting some kind of probiotic supplement. Salmonella is everywhere - not just in raw meats. Employ basic hygiene practices, wash your hands and keep surfaces clean - just as you would when handling your own food. It takes a lot of water to re- hydrate those little nuggets! Back to top of page. I must admit I prefer the 'cold turkey' approach of switching rather than a slow switch. When carbohydrates and proteins are eaten at the same time, the protein enzymes go to work first, and the digestion of carbohydrates must wait. While the carbohydrates are waiting around to be digested, they ferment and release toxins in the body. Proper food combining might more aptly be called not combining foods: Give only meat (or other heavy proteins such as eggs or milk) at one meal; give carbohydrates (fruit & grains) for the other meal. Also, grains and meats should not be fed together but veggies can be feed with either, with no loss of nutrients. It is not something they would eat in the wild. Those grains they would have access to would be in small quantities eaten from the stomachs of prey animals who had (in the right season) eaten some grasses that had seeded. These grains would also not look like our modern grains - more like wild rice (check it out at the supermarket and compare to domestic types). Billinghurst seminar: grains are not a natural food for dogs; dogs do not, in fact, need carbohydrates; carbohydrates are easily converted into sugars which feed cancer. Remove the carbs and the cancer has less/nothing to feed on; and grains are one of the major causes of allergies in dogs, and can also cause flatulence (gas. PHEW!!!)! Back to top of page. I haven't cut supplements out totally, although IMO a lot of people tend to over- supplement. This was something Billinghurst suggested too at a recent seminar here, and he mentioned that he only supplements his own dogs every now and again. I think if you are providing a good varied diet you will be providing pretty much what your dog needs - all in a highly bio- available form. My first preference when looking to a certain vitamin/mineral will always be to provide it in its natural form first. So if I feel I need to provide more Vitamin B for example, I would consider what foods contain that vitamin first (e. As we don't necessarily feed the whole animal for example (eyes, brains, stomach and intestines etc etc as well) the addition of things like EFA's (e. I would include yogurt in this category too - it contains good bacteria which a dog may otherwise have got from eating stomach contents/intestines etc (but green tripe can help here too). I like to add a bit of Kelp every now and again for its trace elements. Kelp adds back these trace elements into the diet. I add Vitamins C and E every now and then for their antioxidant properties and their value to optimize health - particularly in our modern polluted environment. Vitamin C is particularly good in times of stress and I am more likely to include it then than at other times. Now realize that while I do include these supplements, I do not include them every day. I don't believe they are necessary every day except some in certain circumstances and perhaps only for short periods. Of course every dogs and every situation will be different (if I lived in a city I might give more C and E for example to combat higher pollution). But remember you are providing a much more nutritious product to begin with with raw natural foods. They are probably getting more nutritional value now out of a varied BARF diet without the supplements that they ever did on kibble. If you do use herbs and vitamins on a regular basis (whether it be for you or your pet), may I suggest you checkout My Herbal Corner, where you'll find the highest quality herbal, vitamin, mineral and nutritional supplements worldwide! If I can lose 7. 8lbs and feel this healthy and have this much energy I can do anything!!– Zoe. Sarah’s Success Story – “I kept seeing results even without working out!”I first found out about the DAMY Programs from two friends of mine from the gym (Kimi and Nikki – both of whom you have seen in their awesome transformations on the site!). They are always researching great webistes, blogs and recipes online and came across Amy’s site and shared some amazing tips, recipes and tricks with me. They were raving about the results they were getting from the BBEC and I wanted in! After having tried other clean diets with some success, I was ready to take it to the next level. Coming to DAMY with a good understanding of clean eating, and with a very active lifestyle, I knew pretty well what I was getting into. I got my daily stress relief (and adrenaline fix!) from high intensity workouts like bootcamps, spinning, sprints, and weight training 5- 6 times per week. I felt I had a pretty good start to the program and was already noticing my clothes fitting better after just a few weeks! Then a crazy thing happened. I am sure you are thinking the same thing I was- how could a healthy, young, non- smoker (who is not on any medications) have a stroke? Well, it actually happened at the gym (and apparently it is not super uncommon in young, healthy individuals who are very physically active- so I found). I was REALLY lucky in that I did not have any side effects like paralysis or weakness on either side, and I thank God that I am ok. The only thing that happened was I had some funny blurriness in my vision once in a while, and I had severe headaches. Once the diagnosis came, I was ordered out of the gym for 3 months. I was pretty bummed about that one especially because I had finally plucked up the courage to try a fitness competition in April with my two pals Kimi and Nikki. But, health comes first and so I diligently (yet begrudgingly at first) obeyed. My first thought was, “OMG I am going to blow up like a balloon if I can’t workout!” But then I remembered something that I have heard from Amy and several other trainers. Well people, it is so true. I kept seeing results even without working out! When I first started, the numbers were not really changing on the scale so much. I did have to go out and buy new jeans and pants though. I have lost a total of 1. Bikini Body Program, but some of it has definitely been due to the fact that I have not been able to workout. This program has really guided me to adopt this “plan” to become my lifestyle. Have you ever heard anyone say, “if you do something enough times, it becomes habit?” That is certainly what the Bikini Body Program has helped me with. I don’t really miss anything. I have become more creative with cooking and have been able to make substitutes for most of my favorite foods! And sure, going out for drinks or out to a party means I might have to plan a little in advance, but I know that it is not worth having something that is bad for me if it means I cannot fit into all my new clothes! There are so many things about this program that are so amazing! The blogs, the daily motivation, the yummy recipes, the testimonials, the emails, and of course, the accountability. Amy has been the most supportive, kind, caring and compassionate cheerleader to me even just through emails. I feel like she has a personal investment in me and she really does care. I know it is her job to care, but she does it with passion and conviction which cannot be forced. She has helped me to be more kind and patient with myself through this difficult time, and it has truly meant so much to me. I really hope that this testimonial might help some of you out there who cannot workout as rigorously or frequently, or if you might be discouraged for any reason. If you take anything away from my story, it is to just remember that keeping on the DIET PLAN is just so important! Thank you so much Amy!– Sarah. Have a question about the program?
